Welcome to the Literacy Hub for the Broader Middle East and North Africa. Here you will find a searchable database of literacy programs,
curricula, assessments and other materials to assist policy makers,
donors, researchers and practitioners with literacy programming and
policies. This is a pilot database that will be expanded over the coming months.
Literacies on the BMENA Literacy Hub
There are many ways to think about the concept of "literacy." Today most people agree that literacy represents far more than basic decoding. We also agree that learning to become literate takes place in formal and informal settings. Therefore the Literacy Hub is organized across formal and informal settings as:
Basic Literacy: Issues related to learning to read and write in formal and informal settings in both monolingual and bilingual contexts. . Intended for beginning readers.
Everyday Life and Work Literacy: Functional reading and writing for personal, civic, and economic purposes in formal and informal settings in both monolingual and bilingual contexts. Intended for post-beginning readers.
Academic Literacy: Reading, writing and higher order thinking in school subject areas: health, English as a second language, maths, science, technology, engineering, native language literature, etc.
The Literacy Hub is funded and managed by the United States Agency for International Development with technical support provided by the International Reading Association.
